CASE STUDY PAPER:
In the newspaper, Anxiety Tests Colleges by Hoffman Jan. The New York Times explains how anxiety has become one of the top mental health disorders in college students. It talks about the percentages and fractions of college students that had to get counseling for anxiety. "More than half of students visiting campus clinics cite anxiety as a health concern, according to a recent study of more than 100,000 students nationwide by the Center for Collegiate Mental Health at Penn State''. This is very alarming because anxiety can really mess up someone's mental health and sometimes it is hard to overcome it. They explain that the anxiety was caused due to the huge amount of workload they have plus other responsibilities they have to worry about. For example, relationships, money, and health.
Anxiety in college students is a topic I can connect with because I struggle with anxiety due to work, school and financial situations. Ever since high school I started to experience anxiety due to all the difficult classes I would take, which left a lot of homework. I had to balance school and basketball in high school. I would go to school five times a week and would practice twice a day six times a week. This was very stressful for me because I would arrive home late and wouldn’t have enough time to finish my homework. I would be extremely tired when I got home and all I wanted to do was take a nap. But at night would be when my anxiety kicked in the most. I would stay up really late trying to finish all my homework. I would sleep around one in the morning and then would have to wake up at around five in the morning to get ready for practice at seven in the morning. Most nights I wouldn’t be able to finish my homework, so during classes I would try to finish it and luckily I was able to finish it. Like now, I procrastinated a lot, so that did not help me at all. I hate having anxiety because out of nowhere I feel sad or nervous. I mostly hate having anxiety when I have a panic attack due to my phobia of spiders. My palms get all sweaty, I bite my nails, I hyperventilate, get dizzy, can’t see or walk clearly, faint on some occasions and start cracking my fingers. To help with my anxiety I listen to music, which helps me a lot because I am in my own world and don’t have to worry about anything for that little moment.
Some ways one can handle stress and anxiety would be listening to music, doing exercise, welcoming humor and maintaining a positive attitude. Listening to music in my opinion is a huge help because it gives you a minute to relax your mind and not think about what is causing your anxiety and stress. Doing exercise can also calm your anxiety and stress because you are focusing your mind on your health and well being. When you are exercising you are letting out all your emotions and stress, in a good and healthy way. Welcoming humor is also a huge one because it is good to give yourself an opportunity to laugh and relax for a while. Lastly, a positive attitude is huge. Being positive and happy most of the time can cause you to calm yourself down and focus on yourself. Giving yourself a minute to breathe and close your eyes for a moment calms your brain and your body.
If I was in Katya’s situation I would seek professional help. Having a panic attack due to pressure and anxiety is not okay. It shows that she doesn’t have a way to calm or reduce her anxiety. Panic attacks are no joke and it is something you have to seek help for. If she had a way to calm her anxiety then I would not seek professional help. I would just follow that routine every time I feel anxiety. Some actions you can take to decrease anxiety and learn optimism would be doing daily exercise, maintaining a good and balanced diet and laying off alcoholic and caffeine drinks. Some good ways to form realistic expectations before beginning each semester would be to expect the worst. I know this isn’t a good thing, but thinking that you will have heavy assignments and lots of homework will help you prepare. Maybe you won’t have all that workload you were expecting which will take a huge weight off your shoulders, and personally that is the best feeling ever!

CASE STUDY REFLECTION:
For this case study project I decided to choose anxiety in college students and how to reduce it because it is a topic I can relate with. I have had anxiety since high school but it got worse when I got into college. I guess I just always wanted to believe that college and high school would be the same and they would give somewhat the same workload, but boy was I wrong. College does not give as much homework but they just ask for a lot more detail and nothing can be vague. Everything has to be explained and summarized. It was very interesting to learn about how college can really mess up students mentally, physically and emotionally. I had no idea that anxiety was one of the top mental disorders tested in college students. Personally when I get anxiety I get very nervous and start having mini panic attacks. I hate feeling nervous because I don’t know why I start getting nervous. It just happens and it is very annoying. Many college students when wanting to reduce their anxiety they start drinking or doing drugs. Yeah I have heard weed does help with anxiety and so does alcohol because it helps you relax and not think about what is making you feel anxiety, but then again it is bad to do this every time you feel anxiety. It is better to do something that won’t affect your health and won’t make you keep craving more and more. For example, closing your eyes and taking a moment for yourself really helps. Your brain is able to relax and not think about anything but quietness, and honestly this is the best feeling ever. Some things that help me reduce my anxiety would be listening to music, closing my eyes, and doing some exercise. Exercise is a huge one because your mind is focusing on something else and you are able to help yourself in a positive way. While doing this case study I also had to put myself in someone else's situation and think about the ways that I can do better or what can help me. Whenever you or someone is feeling anxiety and you are feeling a panic attack kicking in, always take care of yourself and go to the doctors. It is always good and beneficial to let a professional help you because then they may have some tips to help you and reduce your anxiety.
